Rabbit breeders
are often the best place to go when considering a pet rabbit. Just make sure the breeder is reputable and takes good care of the animals. You can ask to visit the breeder and carefully observe where the bunnies are kept and raised. Also make sure the rabbits are well socialized. Look for the following when choosing a pet rabbit:
Eyes that are clear and bright. Eyes that weep or are matted could be a sign of disease.
Teeth that are clean and even and meet in the front. . Malocclusion is a genetic condition where the teeth do not grow properly. Rabbits have "ever growing" incisors and it is very important that these teeth come together and wear properly.
Ears and nose should be clean and free of discharge.
The rabbit’s fur should be bright and shiny. The coat on a bunny often reflects the overall condition of the rabbit.
For a list of private rabbit breeders in your area, you can contact the American Rabbit Breeders Association (ARBA.) The American Rabbit Breeders Association is located in Bloomington, Illinois and has over 28,000 members. Members include owners of a single pet rabbit to breeders with several hundred animals. Inquiries and new members are always welcomed.
